BLOODROOT LITERARY MAGAZINE, Thetford Center, VT, v.1 2008 ----.ISSN: 1940-4409.

Growing from a writers' group and intended "to provide a platform for the free-spirited emerging and established writer," BLOODROOT is a wonderful, eclectic sampling of literary styles and themes. Contributors come from widely varied backgrounds and include published poets, novelists, and children's authors, among others. One delightful poet describes himself as having "sold his first poem for twenty-five cents to a classmate in sophomore English [and] has remained optimistic about his ability to support himself as a poet ever since."

BLOODROOT features works from international as well as American authors. Some of the writing is haunting, e.g., Linda Himadi's short story "The Calling", a tale of death and resurrection, and Laura Foley's poem "Father-in-Law", which captures the meaning of the Holocaust in the fate of a single Polish Jew.

Other contributions describe places and events that have meaning both literally and metaphorically, e.g., E.D. Roberts's "The Terminal Station" and Bill Thrane's "The Ten Dollar Bill," a moving tribute to a Depression-era mother's care and resourcefulness. Danny Dover's poem "Time Machine" is a poignant and charming glimpse of selfhood at the brink of adolescence.

These few citations hardly do justice to the richness and diversity of the collections. Volumes 1 and 2 are already published; volume 3 is now in preparation. This reviewer looks forward to its appearance with high expectations.
