Summering In Dresden (excerpt)
|
|
Each year there is at least one-near drowning. One mishap that
for Dresden takes on the magnitude of the crop of murders one
expects in urban areas. This is no shark-attack fantasy like
the popular movie and its sequels. This is real tragedy in this
modern-day Eden. Some little girlbody, boybody sinks beneath
the dark lake waters and is almost lost in the secure gated world
of privilege. It is hard to change the rituals of summering even
if the ultimate loss occurs. The vigilance may increase for a time.
Perhaps you might see alarm flicker across otherwise tranquil faces
until the summer ends. But everyone feels so safe, so entitled to
the privileges of paradise.
